House at a Former Mill: MHB Steel & Sky-Frame
Set in a beautiful Wiltshire valley, this new family home, built on the site of a former mill, offers spaces for coming together and creating new memories.
The house is composed of three stone barn volumes connected by a central zinc-clad link, whose red tones reflect the hues of existing roofs and surrounding trees. Generous, light-filled interiors create a strong connection to the landscape, with deep reveals on larger south-facing openings providing shading while framing expansive views.
High-performance frameless Sky-Frame sliding doors and ultra-slim, thermally broken MHB solid steel windows and doors enhance the design, offering minimal visual impact and seamless integration with the natural surroundings.
The material palette reuses natural stone found on-site, reinterpreting local stone buildings with a contemporary approach. The structure uses low-water-use load-bearing clay blocks with elements of exposed timber.
The design prioritises climate resilience, responding to a rising flood plain and modern weather conditions. Sustainable strategies include high airtightness, thick thermal insulation, a PV array, air-source heat pump, whole-house MVHR, borehole water supply, and rainwater collection for garden use. Carefully designed external spaces allow the family to enjoy the house in all seasons, times of day, and weather conditions.
